 [12:02:54] <karenreid>  Hi!
 [12:03:03] <Andrey_>  Hello!
[12:03:12] <karenreid>  I'm guessing everyone is as swamped as our students here seem to be.
 [12:03:30] <kiramccoan>  Hi I made it :D
 [12:03:41] <karenreid>  I just realized that. :-)
 [12:05:02]  jolle (~jeeulo@d172-219-72-83.abhsia.telus.net) joined #markus.
[12:05:05] <karenreid>  We should probably get started. I just created a doodle poll to find a time for a final post mortem meeting.

 [12:05:24]  e-morency (cea7b869@gateway/web/freenode/ip.206.167.184.105) joined #markus.
[12:05:25] <karenreid>  I have a conflict with Friday noon next week.
[12:06:21] <karenreid>  What I would like to get from everyone is
[12:06:53] <karenreid>  a short (one page) informal description of what you did, and what you learned
[12:07:12] <karenreid>  Someone earlier this week helpfully reminded me that you should include things that you tried and didn't work.
[12:07:38] <karenreid>  since this is a natural part of the development process.
[12:08:08] <karenreid>  please be specific, but you don't need to spend a lot of time crafting paragraphs.
[12:09:24] <karenreid>  Also, if you want me to take into consideration anything you do after the end of next week, or would prefer to send your final report after the end of next week, please let me know.
[12:09:43] <karenreid>  Otherwise, let's start with the rounds.
 [12:09:52] <karenreid>  e-morency: your are up first
[12:11:24] <e-morency>  ok like I said I didn't know if we still had to work on it the project, but I think I understand that next week will be the last week we work on it "officially"
[12:13:19] <e-morency>  but this week I started finalizing my work, tried to mostly wrap up the user preferences (nearly did)
[12:13:26] <karenreid>  It is a little bit flexible. If you feel that you did lots of work at the beginning of the term, and didn't really have any weeks where you couldn't work on MarkUs, then it would be reasonable to not work on anything new this week and just warp things up.
[12:14:45] <e-morency>  next week I would like to "fix" the column hiding logic
[12:14:59] <e-morency>  like I said for the moment columns are hidden in Javascript once the table is fully loaded
[12:15:41] <e-morency>  the best way would be to not load the columns when loading the table
[12:16:08] <e-morency>  it might prove to be a little bit troublesome, but I still have some ideas how to do so
[12:16:52] <e-morency>  after that (if I still have enough time), I might try to fix a last small issue
[12:16:55] <karenreid>  sounds good. Please document your efforts in comments in the issue so that if you don't finish, the next person has a place to start.
 [12:17:11] <e-morency>  ok
 [12:17:30] <karenreid>  joeyperry: your turn
 [12:18:12] <joeyperry>  alright
[12:18:32] <joeyperry>  I've looked into the problem of the tables taking a long time to populate
[12:18:58] <joeyperry>  and I know what is contributing most of the ineffeciency, which is rendering a partial in a loop
 [12:19:01] <karenreid>  I like the blog post
 [12:19:07] <joeyperry>  using render_to_string
[12:19:18] <joeyperry>  thanks! I'll actually update it with my progress, once I'm certain of it
[12:19:43] <joeyperry>  I also found some inefficiencies in the FilterTable, that I've hacked in a correction
 [12:19:50] <joeyperry>  it's a pretty complex thing... that class
[12:20:10] <karenreid>  Someone else mentioned that FilterTable was not very efficient
[12:20:12] <joeyperry>  but right now, it gets a hash value back for each row, which is the contents of the row, rendered by the view
 [12:20:25] <joeyperry>  so <td>value</td><td>othervalue</td>, etc.
[12:20:57] <joeyperry>  it actually does a split on the </td> and then trims off the <td>, to get the value, and then builds new html elements with prototype
[12:21:03] <joeyperry>  even though we're sending all that data as a hash...
[12:21:19] <joeyperry>  so I've changed it to grab from the hash, if the rendered row isn't available
[12:21:30] <joeyperry>  so it cuts down the data sent to the client by 3/4
[12:22:06] <joeyperry>  but it's still slow, because one of the fields is still some markup, with links to edit comments, so that's what I'm looking at optimizing now
[12:22:22] <joeyperry>  trying to avoid any real drastic changes to the filter table for now, so we could easily convert other tables to do this as well
[12:22:42] <karenreid>  cool. This kind of work on MarkUs is much appreciated.
[12:22:43] <joeyperry>  I'll have something at least by next week
[12:23:01] <joeyperry>  the loading just makes it really frustrating to browse around
[12:23:13] <joeyperry>  especially editing students, because every time you go back to that page, it's another 5 seconds
[12:23:17] <joeyperry>  another option would be to look at memcache
[12:23:40] <karenreid>  memcache has come up several times also, and would definitely be worth looking at.
[12:23:42] <joeyperry>  but if you're editing student info, it invalidates that cached response anyway...
[12:23:49] <joeyperry>  I'm sure we could leverage it somehow though
 [12:24:18] <karenreid>  just a second

 [12:27:24] <karenreid>  sorry, I'm back
 [12:27:44] <karenreid>  I have mikeing2001 next on the list
[12:27:49] <mikeing2001>  I finish updating and adding information to the documentation. I need to submit a pull request for that. I looked into the remark request issues. I think I have a good temp fix for it but I want to run another test before I submit a pull request to make sure it works on mysql database.
[12:28:38] <karenreid>  That's the one that's based on the id numbering of the results?
[12:28:43]  joeyperry (~joeyperry@wpa-2-1034.cc.umanitoba.ca) left irc: Ping timeout: 260 seconds
 [12:29:02] <mikeing2001>  yes
[12:29:15] <mikeing2001>  but there is also another issue dealing with releasing and unreleasing marks
[12:29:24] <mikeing2001>  it not showing the correct results either
[12:29:40] <mikeing2001>  it looks like it is also a postgresql as well but i want to make sure
 [12:29:41] <karenreid>  right.
[12:30:41] <karenreid>  well if it is something that depends on the ordering of rows in the db, then it isn't really a postgres issue. it is a logic issue.
[12:30:55] <karenreid>  because we can't assume an oder in the databse.
 [12:31:03] <karenreid>  order
 [12:31:09] <mikeing2001>  yes let me rephrase, issue only showing in postgresq;
 [12:31:18] <karenreid>  okay, :-)
[12:32:32] <karenreid>  mikeing2001: are you in a position where you could create a release that Alan could install on our server here before Christmas? It would be good to see what's involved in installing a new version.
[12:32:49] <karenreid>  and then I could try to break it too. :-)
[12:33:14] <mikeing2001>  I think the code is ready for that but to do that I not 100% sure. I can try
[12:33:50] <karenreid>  The end of next week or early the following week would be idea.
 [12:33:53] <karenreid>  ideal.
 [12:34:20] <mikeing2001>  i will try
